What to Wear to Work in the Summer: Office Attire for Women
With a season of escalating temperatures on the horizon, here are some wardrobe tweaks to keep you feeling cool and looking great in the office.
Consult your company’s dress code
Businesses can have a variety of policies regarding summer office attire. It all depends on your particular office. If your company handbook doesn’t give specific dress code instructions, do have your own. Create a standard for dressing for work yourself. Choose conservatively, you are always safer when you err on the side of caution. Summer is not the time to take a vacation on professionalism.
Start with summer staples that are appropriate
Think layers. Pairing your outfit with a lightweight jacket or cardigan are a great ways to adjust to the different temperatures you’ll encounter throughout your day. Enjoy lightweight natural fabrics like cotton and linen that breathe. Work with a canvas of colors that include pastels, cream, and blushes. The classic white shirt works for everyone and should be included in your summer wardrobe. Opt for a 3/4 or short sleeve fit with darting. Sheath dresses, polished dresses, and A-line skirts with the hemline at your knees would be appropriate. Business suits made of cotton or linen fabrics are perfect for summer. Appropriate doesn’t need to be boring, use pops of colors and accessories to brighten up outfits.
Do not under-dress
There are options that are never appropriate for the office. Open back, crop tops, and rising hems are types of garments that are generally considered too bare for a work environment. Your lack of clothing shouldn’t be a distraction at work. You want the focus on your good ideas, not on the amount of skin you’re exposing. Save the tank tops, spaghetti straps, and shorts for the weekend. You wouldn’t wear a suit and heels to the beach. So, don’t wear something you’d wear to the beach to the office.
Your image is twelve months a year. Maintain your your professional presence even during the summer.
