bed and breakfast etiquette

There is a charm that is experienced when staying at a bed and breakfast that cannot be found at a chain hotel. Whether it’s your first time or a returning guest, the following tips will help you have a pleasant experience when staying at a B&B.

  1. People who run bed and breakfasts generally live there, treat the Inn with respect as you would anyone’s home.

  2. Inform the innkeeper of any special needs that you have. In advance of your check in date, let the innkeeper know about dietary restrictions or special requests, such as a handicap-accessible room.

  3. Pay attention to the check-in times and make an effort to adhere to them.

  4. Breakfast is one of the highlights of the stay. Respect the innkeeper’s schedule and arrive on time. Compliment the innkeeper, especially if the meal is really good.

  5. Know the B&B’s policies regarding pets.

  6. Accidents do happen. Notify your host immediately so they can attend to any spills, stains, or breaks.

  7. Tipping the owner of a bed and breakfast isn’t required. However, some bed and breakfasts have a small housekeeping staff.  It is appropriate to tip the housekeeper $2 to $5 per day.

  8. Leaving a thank you note is not required but appreciated. Let the innkeeper know about your experience and what you liked about your visit.

Practice courtesy and embrace the charm of a bed and breakfast.
